Smart Grid

Secure Wireless Connectivity for the Entire Grid

With a metro-scale deployment of the Ultra-Link Processing™ wireless communication system, utilities can deploy one network for all of their distributed monitoring needs. Whether it is for Advanced Metering Infrastructure, fault circuit indicator or Smart Transformer monitoring, or sub-station automation, the extended reach and high capacity of the On-Ramp Wireless’ technology, provides a low cost, secure, flexible, and easy to manage wireless network.

Smart Meter - On Ramp Wireless

The Ultra-Link Processing™ network can extend even further into the utility operations than previously possible, but with less networking infrastructure. With its ultra-low power operation, multi-year battery life for endpoint devices, and the ability to penetrate walls and ground covers, the Ultra-Link Processing™ system offers a solution for hard to reach electric meters, and gas and water metering while drastically lowering network infrastructure and operational cost.

Most metropolitan areas can be covered by a robust link with as few 10-20 ULP Access Points. The system offers an attractive Total Cost of Ownership due to low installation and maintenance costs. Compare this to competing solutions with hundreds, even thousands, of routers and cell relays.

The utility industry is continually presented with specific requirements that create challenges for the operation of wireless communication systems. Ultra-Link Processing™ has been designed and built from the ground up to meet these challenges.

Current Development

On-Ramp Wireless is in the execution stage of a project, funded by the US Department of Energy (DOE) see press release , to examine the ULP technology’s ability to monitor the below-ground distribution grid. In partnership with a leading distribution automation device manufacturer, On-Ramp Wireless has field tested this capability with the assistance of two Southern California utilities, Sempra Energy and Southern California Edison. The project will test ULP wireless modules integrated with fault indicators on below-ground distribution circuits.
