Glossary
Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS)
DSSS is a proven modulation technique in telecommunications. It is, as the name indicates, a spread spectrum technology. On-Ramp Wireless is pioneering the use of DSSS by allowing dynamic allocation of the spreading level (processing gain). DSSS has a proven history within well-known wireless technologies such as CDMA.
Un-licensed ISM-bands
The Industrial, Scientific, and Medical radio bands are (generally) internationally reserved bands for RF electromagnetic fields, such as the microwave. Lately these bands have been shared with license free communication systems. On-Ramps Wireless’ Ultra-Link Processing™ technology utilizes the 2.4 GHz ISM band.
Ultra-Link Processing™ (ULP)
Ultra-Link Processing™ is the trademarked name of the breakthrough wireless technology developed by On-Ramp Wireless.
Random Phase Multiple Access (RPMA)
Random Phase Multiple Access is the name of the unique, highly efficient multiple access scheme developed by On-Ramp Wireless and deployed in its wireless communication systems.
Bandwidth
A bandwidth denotes a given frequency range. On-Ramp Wireless’ initial wireless communication system uses a bandwidth of 1Mz, but the technology allows for the signal to be spread over a narrower or wider bandwidth as well.
Star Topology
The ULP system operates in a star topology, meaning that all nodes communicate, bidirectionally, with the Access Point. By using an efficient protocol, the star topology has the advantage (over mesh and other topologies) of significantly simplifying network architecture and optimizing network capacity.
Mesh Networking
In a mesh network, data is routed from node to node (potentially in several hops) until it reaches its intended destination. 802.15.4 and other wireless networks have been implemented with mesh network application layers applied.
IEEE 802.15.4K
The IEEE 802.15.4K Task Group is in the process of defining a standard for Low Energy Critical Infrastructure Monitoring (LECIM) applications. On-Ramp is a founding member and actively engaged in this standardization process.
Zigbee
Zigbee is one of the more popular applications layers used in conjunction with the 802.15.4 standard. It is primarily used for short range, Home Area Network (HAN) applications. For some applications On-Ramp Wireless ULP and Zigbee may coexist to form an integrated solution.
