On-Ramp Wireless Expands Operations to Asia

Driven by the level of local demand for Ultra-Link Processing™ wireless products, On-Ramp opens Asia headquarters in Singapore

San Diego, Calif. – November 11, 2010 – On-Ramp Wireless today announced expansion of its business development and customer support activities in Asia, as well as South East Asia, Australia, New Zealand and India, with the opening of new offices in Singapore. As part of this expansion, On-Ramp welcomes Hon Yew Leung as General Manager, heading up the Asia regions. Mr. Leung joins On-Ramp from Itron International, where he was responsible for Asia business development in the utility smart meter market. Beyond that, Mr. Leung brings more than 20 years of industry experience in utility and industrial markets.

On-Ramp’s Ultra-Link Processing™ (ULP) technology delivers breakthrough features, such as high capacity, long range, robustness to interference and low power operation for utility automation applications. The same integrated network infrastructure can support powered electric metering and battery operated electric distribution grid applications, such as above and below ground Fault Circuit Indicators. Furthermore, the same network can address battery operated water and gas meters with no additional repeater or secondary radio technology.

This flexibility makes the ULP system uniquely suited to meet the connectivity challenges presented by the Asia regions smart grid initiatives. Due to its high number of extremely dense population centers, the region introduces its own complexities in the Smart Grid. The ULP system is uniquely capable of meeting these challenges by greatly enhancing the capacity and range of the wireless network system compared with competing solutions. In turn, network infrastructure costs are dramatically lowered, complexity is reduced, and for the first time, a truly combined smart grid is produced.

On-Ramp’s expansion will aid in driving increasing business development and customer support activities. Asia has been a pioneer of smart grid activity over the last year. In fact, during a speech at the Singapore International Energy Week in early November, Singapore’s Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong cited the smart grid as central to the country’s infrastructure development, noting, ‘emerging smart grid technologies offer tremendous potential improvements in energy efficiency and supply reliability.’

“As the Asian market continues to introduce smart grid programs at an increasing pace, we are seeing a lot of activity. Our need to have an executive and an office on the ground was apparent, and we are excited to welcome Mr. Leung to the team,” said Jeff Gray, Sr. VP of Sales, Marketing and Business Development at On-Ramp. “We are going to see even more pilot projects over the next few years as the disruptive nature of the Smart Grid and all it encompasses continues to take hold worldwide. On-Ramp is excited to partake in this paradigm shift.”
